update with latest development to be run by the group for people's thoughts: Bookies just purchased a second location, the former Au Bon Pain in Campus Martius Park which just closed today. Considering we already have a working agreement with Bookies, would it be worthwhile to approach the City of Detroit about renting out the park one of the days of the World Cup to host a soccer viewing party? For other past events, Campus Martius Park has utilized large movie screen sized screens to show movies on in the evenings during the summer. Perhaps we could get them to show live broadcasts of games on them. Additionally, since I used to work at that store, I have Heather (the park manager)'s phone number and could arrange for a meeting with her to discuss ideas. We could also receive donations from corporations that frequently support activities in the park: IKEA, Compuware, Ford, or DTE are the most frequent donors. Finally, for past event's IKEA has supplied shuttle service from their store in Canton to Campus Martius and back. While we are talking to IKEA, we could ask them if they could have their shuttle service running on that day. Any other ideas that could make for a successful event?

That would be awesome, that would get some press I'm sure (we better have more than a few people there if there is).

That would be a great idea, and definitely would get a lot of interest. You could post it on the AO website (I know they are helping to hype up parties like this for the WC) and you'd have a while to publicize it everywhere.

I've given Dylan the 411 on the Gmail account. Now I just have to introduce Dylan to the concept that is Twitter.

Update- Everything is sent in and Matt is going to check to see how many members we have. We should be at 25 though. And another guy was asking about the chapter on facebook and I talked to him and he said he has like 5 other people that will join. So we should be good.

Good work guys. It is a hassle to jump through all the hoops AO requires, but it does make sure you've got a core group.

Word has been confirmed by Jimmie, the AO Detroit Chapter is official! The group has 29 members registered, and in fact I'm working on a 30th that should be signed up later this week.

Word came in yesterday that the Campus Martius Park idea is off for US-England due to the park already being booked for a wedding reception.
