They said that they want to secure D3 sanctioning but get enough teams that if there is no D2 sanctioning, by default they would become D2. I dunno how USSF is gonna feel about that, though. If no league has enough teams to be sanctioned as D2, they're not going to have a gap between D1 (MLS) and D3. They're going to have to soften their stance and make one of the leagues D2.

It sounds to me like they're trying to race the NASL teams to be the first to get enough teams to secure USSF D-2 sanction. If they have enough (what is it, 8? 12?), the NASL might just die on the vine.

So many questions...
1) How will the NASL react? Is this part of the plan to cooperate? Or is this some sort of move to show the NASL that they mean business? 2) Second division? Third? How will sanctioning work? 3) Who will be in it? Will teams move up from PDL on the West Coast to join, as has been hinted at? Is FC New York, Orlando, Antigua (all previously announced), as well as Dayton going to be part of this? And will some NASL teams, like the Rhinos, come back? |

Starting in 2011, USL will merge its first and second divisions to form the new USL PRO division to be a new second division under MLS. The new league will consist of as many as four geographic regions, with teams announced in the coming weeks. With this, there is a good chance that a couple of PDL teams, like the Dutch Lions, may also move up into the new USL PRO division...although that is just a guess on my part at this time. |
